OOTD: Test Shots

This isn't really a proper outfit post since it's nothing special - I was headed to my part time job on the weekend so I just threw on whatever. For those who are curious, I work full time in an office setting as well as part time on the weekends at the library on my old college campus. Gotta fund my shopping addiction some way, right? :P

I wanted to take a few test shots with my camera because I've never tried shooting in an outdoor setting....and let me tell you that it is not easy at all if you are doing it by yourself. Why can't our boyfriends and hubbies be more willing to take our outfit photos for us??? :(

A tripod and remote made it much easier, but it took me a few tries before I could frame the shots right. I am also super self conscious about taking photos outdoors if there are passerbyers around and I am neurotically paranoid about someone stealing my camera if I'm not standing guard over it lol

This was also my first time editing my pictures in Adobe Lightroom. I've never used Lightroom before so all the buttons and panels are confusing the heck out of me. Still though, I'm really happy with how the pictures turned out!

Shooting outdoors makes a world of difference in the presentation of the photo and outfit. I know you guys are probably tired of seeing the entranceway to my apartment building (where I took all my old outfit photos) so I will try my best to scout new locations for my future outfit posts :)

Urban Outfitters Cooperative Striped Satchel (old)

  3. A full time job AND a part time?! Such a hard worker! :'D Keep up the good work.
I know exactly how you feel...It's really uncomfortable taking pictures of myself in public just because I'm afraid people will think I'm full of myself. xD
Your outfit is so so pretty. I really like our bag. So bright and nice! :D

  4. Beautiful outfit! You look great! Love the bag!

  10. I loooove your bag here. Oh, and I'm comfortable shooting outdoors. It's usually my younger sister who takes my photos... :)

  11.  The pictures look amazing! My bf takes pictures of me, but always when I'm not ready hahaaha. I feel uncomfortable posing for a ootd because I don't know how to pose XD

  12. Hi Rinny :) You look so polished here. I think these shots were great! You did an amazing job! Really great photos. And you look nothing less than polished =) And two jobs? Good for you to work at a library on the weekends!

  13. :] I really like how your photos turned out! I'm also really self conscious about taking photos outside. xD I don't really want to set up a tripod and stuff and have people walking past. *blush*

    ReplyDelete
  14. omg im super paranoid also. im afraid my camera would be stolen or worse broken! like if someone accidently shoves it over! your shots are amazing. makes me want to get a tripod myself! i dont know if my cam has a remote compatibility haha

    ReplyDelete
  15. Wow everything came out really well! I love your pea coat here it looks so cosy. I totally understand what you mean about passers by looking at you while taking pictures I would feel the same way haha!

    ReplyDelete
  16. These photos are GREAT! Love the setting!

And yes, why can't the boyfriend be a lil more cooperative when it comes to taking OOTD pictures? lol

    ReplyDelete
  17. The pictures are awesome =] Love your outfit and the bag ^^.  OMW yes. I thought it was just me who doesn't have a photographer BF *sigh*. Glad you did so well with a tripod and a remote! Who needs a guy eh?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Love these, Rinny!! I just got a remote, so I'll be out there this week trying to figure out how to get my outfit photos framed right too haha :)

  19.  Cute outfit! I used to live in NJ too haha ♥

  21. Oh so pretty shoots Rinny ^___^
Mostly it's me, my camera, my tripod and timer for OOTD photos :P
I am wondering where you bought that bag!

  22. Wow!! You shot this outside by yourself? This is amazing! I would never have known that it was tripod and remote! :)

I love your peacoat :) it's such a lovely blue! Really like the way it contrasts against the red.

And boy you really work hard! Two jobs on the go!

  23. You look great Rinny. I love how that Miss Sixty jacket fits on you. It seems so warm in the states, is it true that it hasnt been snowing that much?? I love the new edited pictures too. They look bright and put together! Are u in front of a library? ^^

  24. I prefer outdoors for my outfit photos because you kind of get to see the outfits "in actions" (even if they are totally posed!) I think these turned out great for your first time... I always have such difficulty self-taking my photos but thankfully my bf is kind enough to play photographer. Can't wait to see more :)

  25. you look very girly and pretty. nothing "whatever" about your outfit! :)
i have trouble capturing good shots on my own face even with good lightings, i'd only dream about doing ootd pics without using mirror. lol
i totally get what you mean being self-conscious when you take pictures outside.
i used to take mirror shots in the big ladies room of the building i work, i'd get startled whenever other people come in. ;p

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thank you so much Eva! Haha I think that's just Lightroom doing it's magic though :P

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thanks! I do too, so I will definitely try my best to take future outfit photos outdoors :D

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thank you Amy! haha well the job at the library is super laid back and unstressful; sometimes I don't even know if you could really classify it as a job :P

And yes exactly! That's what I'm afraid of too >.<

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thank you so much Emi!

I use the new Canon T3i I bought for all of my pictures now. I thought you have a DSLR? The quality of your photos always looks so good, and I remember you had mentioned you use a lightring in one of your posts.

You could always use the self timer, but it's a real pain having to run back and forth ><

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks Banny! Haha I would love a designated photographer too, but you could always do it yourself with a tripod and remote :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thanks Gellie! Lucky you! I wish I had someone taking them for me too. The only reason I'm uncomfortable taking them outdoors is because it's just me and my tripod haha :P

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thank you! Haha aww at least your bf is willing to help you! And I don't know how to pose either - I find looking away from the camera really helps though :P

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks Katherine! haha yeah I know what you mean - I hope that eventually I'll become comfortable enough to do it even if there are ppl around ;P

    ReplyDelete
  34. Thanks Kumiko! Yeah the camera being stolen thing is one of my worst fears about shooting outside by myself. I was on full alert when I took these haha :P

I think most DSLRs have remote compatibility but I'm not sure about point and shoots. I would definitely look into it if I were you though - it's very handy!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks Sunny! lol I know right? I mean it's not rocket science - just point and click! =_=

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thank you so much Ani! lol yeah you have a point there - I probably do a better job than my bf anyway. He'd probably start complaining after 5 mins ~_~

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thanks so much Candice! I hope you'll have luck with it! It gets easier once you've taken the first few photos :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thanks! Ooo which part of NJ did you used to live in? I haven't met too many bloggers who are from (or were from) NJ :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thank you so much Mei! Why don't you get a remote for your camera? It would probably make things a bit easier for you :)

And the bag was from Urban Outfitters. I bought it awhile ago though, so unfortunately it isn't in stock anymore ><

    ReplyDelete
  40. aww so pretty! I love your boots dear <3 <3
I don't mind shooting outdoors since I do cosplaying ^^

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thanks so much Jian! I'm glad you like how the photos turned out, especially since this is my first time shooting by myself :)

haha yeah I've gotta pay the bills some way right? :P

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thank you so much Winnie! Yeah it's been really cold lately but we haven't gotten much snow this year. We've always had at least 1 snowstorm every winter but it's almost March and the most snow we've gotten was like 4-5 inches the most that one day.

Haha and yes, I actually am! This is the library where I work on the weekends. You are really observant :D

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thank you so much Lena! Haha really? I would have never imagined because your fotd shots always look so nice and well lit!

Lol it was the same way with me when I was taking these photos outside - I'd run over to my camera and pretend to be playing with the settings whenever someone was getting near :P

    ReplyDelete
  44. You look amazing in your photos indoors or out.  I love these shots, and the bf should take your pictures.  Love the boots and I'm excited to see more outfit posts from you!

  45. This turned out so well Rinny!! Keep it up!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Workaholic! lol Do you give yourself any time off??  ;)

I like your purse a lot. Haven't used lightroom before, actually I haven't heard of it. lol It turned out well though so keep doing what you're doing!

I definitely agree, I love outdoor shots!

    ReplyDelete
  47. love your coat :)
i've used a tripod before but i was indoors lol i'll be too shy to do it outside haha

    ReplyDelete
  48. these are some AMAZING shots and i really love your outfit as well :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. i love the pics as well as your outfit! keep it up! you're doing great :)

  50. I think the photos turned out great, Rinny!!
Man, tell me about it. I envy those bloggers who have photographer boyfriends or at least partners or family members who are willing to take their outfit shots.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh btw, you work part-time on weekends, too? A year ago, before pursuing my Master's, I was working full-time and did waitressing on the weekends. I quite the part-time after a couple of months. Couldn't take it, too tiring haha

    ReplyDelete
  52. i have a "premium point and shoot" so it's in-between quality =/ and it is a pain! i hate how it gets unfocused sometimes when i move in front, i don't even notice too because i don't really look too closely ><  but actually, after reading your post i did some research and found a remote for my cam :D i'm going to try it out when it comes lol thank you rinny <3

    ReplyDelete
  53. aww I love this outfit!
So elegant and pretty Rinny :D

  56. "isn't really a proper outfit post since it's nothing special"I totally disagree with this! It's something really different and refreshing. I love it that your outfit shots would be done outdoors as much as possible. These are really good. And I really love the wall as the background. Good choice! Must be the library.

So you used a tripod and remote eh? I'm really tempted to invest now. You know my hubby HATES to take outfit shots for me. Its akin to murdering him. He loves taking candid shots though and sometimes they do turn out artistic. Anything but outfit shots.

You remind me of me last time when I worked 7 days a week. Nights and weekends were spent giving private tuition. Now, i'm so totally away from that kinda life and I find you so hardworking. *pats on back*

  57. you did such an amazing job taking solo photos of yourself outdoors! =) You should be proud!

I think you did a great job.. I'd be embarrassed tbh.. I can do self- mirror shots or do an outfit shot at home :P The husband always does the best shot but he refuses like 50% of the time LOL!  Love that pop of red again the navy :)

    ReplyDelete
  60. I  love the peacoat! It looks so stylish and warm~
I would feel nervous about passerbyers too! But these photos look great ^^

  63. I used to have my husband take photos, but it's hard working around his schedule so I borrowed my daughter's tripod from her telescope. Lol. I tried a remote a couple times by myself but found it hard to position myself just right while staying within distance of the camera sensor. SO - my genius brother suggested I use the smile shutter on my camera. I just turn it on, pose and smile. So all my pictures are of me smiling, but no remote to awkwardly coordinate. Lol.

    ReplyDelete
  64. these pictures are great! and I totally agree, I don't understand why guys are so allergic to taking pictures?! my bf will grab my camera and take pics of his car and landscape stuff, but as SOON as I stand infront of him, he goes "ugggggh"....

    ReplyDelete
  65. I feel the same way. I get frustrated when my SO doesn't want to take pictures for me. It would seriously take half the time!

    ReplyDelete
  66. ooh what is adobe lightroom like? I want to get a software package like adobe photoshop but adobe lightroom that you mention and looking at your photos make it sound good too :D

    ReplyDelete
  67. Thanks Cominica! Cosplaying looks like it would be a lot of fun - I've always wanted to try it at least once ^^

    ReplyDelete
  68. Thanks so much Bessie! Haha I think he should take my pictures too >.<

    ReplyDelete
  69. Haha well my PT job at the library is super laid back, so I normally do what I do during my time off (blogging) while I'm there. So I technically still have my time off but I get paid for it too lol :P

And thanks! You should give Lightroom a try - it's like a much simpler version of Photoshop if you're using it to make lighting adjustments and minor tweaks.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Thanks! Haha yeah I can understand why - it's definitely a bit awkward if someone sees you and wonders what you're doing :P

    ReplyDelete
  71. Thanks so much Jen for your words of encouragement! :D

    ReplyDelete
  72. Thank you so much Joey! Yeah me too - it would make things so much easier if we had an extra helping hand :(

    ReplyDelete
  73. Haha aww well I can imagine why - waitressing looks like it's a tough job since you have to be on your feet all day. My part time job at the library is nothing compared to waiting tables, so it isn't tiring at all. If I was working any other job though, I don't think I would last more than a few months either :P

    ReplyDelete
  74. Ohhh a premium point and shoot - no wonder the quality of your photos is so good. Haha glad you were able to find a remote for it though! It'll definitely make things a lot easier for you :D

    ReplyDelete
  75. Thanks so much Lucka! I'm glad you like the pictures :D

    ReplyDelete
  76. Thank you so much Jo! I'm really happy to hear that you like how the photos turned out. Haha you are very observant - that actually is the library in the background :D

And you should definitely get a tripod and remote if the hubby doesn't like taking your outfit photos! They're not expensive at all - I bought mine on Amazon and I think for both items, it was only like $25-$30. Not pricey at all considering how easy taking self portraits will become :)

Lol thanks Jo :D I figured I should probably work as much as I can now while I'm still young and have all this energy. I definitely don't want to be doing this forever. I can only imagine how tough it must have been for you to work every day of the week, especially when tutoring requires so much more effort than my part time job at the library. Sometimes I feel like I can't even call my part time job a "job" because I really only have work duties 10% of the time. The other 90% of the time I'm usually on the computer blogging :P

    ReplyDelete
  77. Haha thanks so much Cheryl! I'm glad to hear you like the pictures :D And I couldn't agree more - outdoor lighting makes a world of difference!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Thank you so much Nic! Lol augh my bf and your hubby are exactly the same! It doesn't even take up that much of their time! :(

    ReplyDelete
  79. Thanks so much TulipLove! I'm glad you like the photos :D

And thanks so much for following my blog!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Haha that's genius! As long as it gets the job done though, right? :D

I don't know if I even have that function on my camera - it's definitely something worth checking out though. Like you said, I have a lot of trouble staying within distance of the sensor on the camera and have to keep moving around a lot before I can get the shutter to release.

    ReplyDelete
  81. LOL that's pretty much the same exact reaction I get from my bf too. And thank you Julie!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Lol I usually try to bribe my bf with fast food so he'll do it - it usually works haha xD

    ReplyDelete
  83. Hi Fiona! I actually have both Photoshop and Lightroom, but honestly since I've gotten Lightroom I prefer it much more than Photoshop when it comes to editing pictures. If you don't need to make large scale changes to your photos, I think Lightroom is more than enough to complete the job.

I mostly change things like brightness, exposure, sharpness, etc. and I like how in Lightroom, all the adjustments you make are nondestructive. The original photo is saved into your harddrive, but Lightroom keeps track of all the changes you've made to the photo in the program, so you can go back and re-adjust as many times as you please. It also has the Clone brush and Healing brush tools, which is really handy. I also like that the interface is more visually appealing and easier to navigate than Photoshop.

Long story short, if you are using it mainly for retouching photos, I'd go with Lightroom. If you're planning on doing larger projects like graphic design and creating banners, etc. Photoshop may be a better choice since it does everything Lightroom does plus more. Hope this helps! :)

    ReplyDelete
  84. No problem Mei! I just wish I had posted this sooner so you'd still have the chance to get the bag! :(

    ReplyDelete
  85. Thank you so much! I'm glad you like :D

    ReplyDelete
  86. Thanks so much Alison! Yeah I know what you mean - the outfits do look a bit more "alive" and "in action" when they're outdoors than than indoors. It's amazing what a different background and lighting can do for a picture :D

And you're very lucky that your bf is willing to be your photographer! Most of us aren't as lucky haha xD

    ReplyDelete
  87. Camera remote only works with DLSR right? If I were to invest, I would first have to invest in the DSLR first. lol... So It would be pricey for me in the end.

Your library job sounds so fun!!! Not like the cliche librarian duties or look. You must be quite an eye candy in the library. ;) I would love to work in a library if I could be on the computer 90% of the time too.

    ReplyDelete
  88. These photos look amazing and I totally know what you mean about hubby/bf's taking photos for us!!! Even after we beg/con then to do it, the photo always turns out looking odd. Sometimes I don't even understand how my bf got that angle LOL I often want to sit my bf down in front of some photo blogs so he can finally understand what it is I want! I guess it's time for me to get a tripod! =D

    ReplyDelete
  89. lol true, true...the dslr would definitely have to be the first investment in that case. Actually, one of my other blogger friends has a digital camera that she says is "in between a point and shoot and a DSLR" and after doing some research, found that she could use a remote with it. So it sounds like advanced point and shoot models have the capability as well.

hahaha eye candy? I don't know about that lol :P But yeah, my duties there are very minimal - mostly just checking in/out books and answering questions from guests. I'm definitely grateful that I have such a laid back job for some extra income :)

    ReplyDelete
  90. I LOVE the first picture! I can't believe you took those pics yourself! You look beautiful =)

  91.  OH you can speak ! You're so pretty too <3 and your style too <3

  92. LOL yeah sometimes I think boys are handicapped when it comes to handling cameras. I don't think it helps either that they're taller than us - their photos always make us look shorter because they shoot from a higher angle ><

Yes, definitely invest in a tripod! You won't regret it :D

    ReplyDelete
  93. Nice photos! <3 And I totally agree with you about taking pictures all by yourself is freakin seriously hard! Good thing your camera has remote. In my case, I only got tripod and self timer.
Set the timer, run on your spot and strike a pose, run back at the camera to see if the picture you took is good, if not then set the self timer again, run back on your spot and strike a pose.
It's pretty tiring doing that so many times especially when you can't get your best angle. haha just wanna share my routine.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Thank you Trisha! Haha I know what you mean because that was how I took all my old outfit photos too before I bought my dslr. I agree, it can be such a pain in the neck because 90% of the photos I took would have to be scrapped because they looked terrible. I still have to take a lot of photos with my dslr before I get a couple of good ones, but at least the entire process isn't as time consuming anymore :)

    ReplyDelete
  95. Haha thank you so much Laura May! You are too kind ^_^
